INTRANASAL SEIZURE KIT DEMONSTRATION
If your veterinarian has prescribed atomized intranasal midazolam, (an anti-convulsant medication to be used during or immediately after a seizure) please read and review their instructions for using this medication carefully.
Some pets can display biting actions or altered mentation during seizures, including aggression, and there is a risk of being bitten when working close to the pet’s mouth.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Yes, you can.
Recent studies have shown midazolam to remain effective for up to 12 months in pre-drawn syringes.
-
Because the mist created by the atomizer is so fine, it is quickly and evenly distributed. Be sure to push the syringe in completely until all of the medication is emptied from the syringe.
-
The mist is more readily absorbed and is less likely to overflow out the nostrils. This is not a common occurrence.
-
Intranasal Midazolam with atomizer administration creates a fine mist that is readily absorbed in the nasal cavity. If your pet sneezes after administration of the drug, there should not be a significant loss of the medication. Please administer the rest of your pet's cluster seizure protocol medications as soon as they can swallow.
-
You will know that your pet received all the Midazolam when seizures have ceased.
Please make sure to give your pet any additional cluster seizure protocol medications as soon as they can swallow.
-
You always want to be safe working around your pet's face during a seizure. If your pet is actively fly-biting or snapping, please wait until the seizure activity has calmed or stopped before approaching your pet's face. Intranasal Midazolam can be given during or immediately following your pet's seizure.
-
Midazolam can be administered one additional dose in a 24 hour period. If your pet continues to seize after giving all cluster seizure protocol medications, you need to bring your pet in to your primary veterinarian's office or to your closest veterinary emergency facility.
-
If your pet is experiencing a cluster seizure event after our normal business hours, please bring them immediately to your nearest emergency clinic, or Pet+E.R. in Hunt Valley. Indications for seeking emergency care for seizures would include a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, two or more seizures in a row in which there is no full recovery or if there are more than 3 seizures in a 24 hour period of time.
Please be sure to report all seizures using our Report a Seizure form
